VIETNAM // Dalat
The main attraction in the city of Dalat is the Hang Nga "Crazy House" -- a distinct piece of architecture functioning as a guesthouse and tourist attraction. The architect's (Dang Viet Nga) expressionist aesthetic is similar to that of Gaudi and Dali, and the structure itself looks like something out of Alice in Wonderland or Pan's Labyrinth.
It's cool. But after following the tourist track and digging through the swarms of selfie people, I found myself in the vacant, unfinished portion of the complex, which I actually thought was more compelling. The place is a such a hazard I can't believe it's open to the public. I shouldn't have been that surprised seeing as it's Vietnam, but holy shit... one wrong turn and you could be impaled by a rusty metal rod or fall down an unfinished staircase. The awkward way they are going about the construction looks as though Nga had one idea, tried it out, decided she didn't like it or it didn't work, and just abandoned it and started upon another portion.
It's fascinating. I found it more interesting than the finished portion.
